I’m a mom of twin toddlers, so I understand how challenging it can be to do things outside the typical routine, and factoring in sensory processing differences can add yet another set of challenges.
When I learned about Sensory Processing Disorder, it was through close friends and family describing the places they had difficulty going, and the situations that they avoided or couldn’t do. I learned how occupational therapists address sensory processing skills and support people of all ages across every environment. That was the catalyst for my decision to go to grad school, earn my masters degree, and become a licensed occupational therapist.
I started working with young children who had a variety of sensory processing challenges, and found it so fulfilling to help them and their families navigate all the parts of their day— getting dressed, brushing teeth and hair, eating, going to school, participating in the classroom. But parents kept telling me how they avoided outings, special events, and vacations. As a mom of young twins, I already had some idea of how difficult trips could be. When COVID hit and I found myself daydreaming about planning trips for my own family, I realized that I could help families plan trips and outings in a way that would yield the most successful and enjoyable memories possible!
COVID also opened a whole new door to virtual coaching and teletherapy services, and I am excited to be able to support families who might not have access to (or time for) traditional outpatient occupational therapy. Our work together focuses on identifying specific sensory needs, selecting and implementing thoughtful sensory strategies, finding the best tools to support your children, and then finding ways to reuse successful sensory strategies for trips and special events.
Whether or not your child has diagnosed sensory needs, another diagnosis (physical, mental health, or cognitive), or you suspect sensory processing differences, I’m excited to help you plan a special event you can feel confident and even excited about!
